The empty offices next to the New Malden Tesco are set to be turned into 447 new homes.

Housebuilders Redrow today announced that it has conditionally exchanged contracts with supermarket chain on the 1.2-acre parcel of land.

The new plans will see the "surplus" land transformed into a "vibrant mixed-use community."

Mark Parker, managing director at Redrow east London said: “Our work in New Malden follows the thousands of well-designed homes we have already delivered across the capital.

"We are excited to break into a new market and deliver the high quality homes here that Redrow is renowned for.

"Although the area is already very well connected, the proposed Crossrail 2 route will open up this sought after part of London further, ensuring that residents are able to access all parts of the capital with ease.

"This is an exciting time to be working in this fast evolving part of London, with the council dedicated to developing New Malden town centre and reviving the high street to reflect future and current residents’ requirements.”

The new site is currently being designed in consultation with Merton Council and TP Bennett Architects.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2020.

The site has come under scrutiny in recent times with a string of Traveller incursions.

This included one just last week where the supermarket in Beverley Way was forced to closed at 10pm as a “safety precaution."
