A former Wimbledon bar known for its cheap shots, student nights and international vibe could be turned into office space.

The Slug in Hartfield Road closed for the final time on November 4, 2017 and has been empty ever since.

But last week developers submitted the first in what is anticipated to be a three part development.

This first stage will include the demolition of the building at 12 Hartfield Road and 9 Broadway Place, and build a nine storey building in its place.

"The proposal scheme has been developed having regard to the local context and opportunities presented by the site location within the heart of Wimbledon town centre," a planning statement prepared by consultants Turley read.

"Overall the proposals will deliver a high quality development which is sensitive to its setting and adjoining properties.

"The proposals will provide a positive enhancement to the Site, improving its individual contribution to the vibrancy of the street and Wimbledon town centre."

This office scheme is just the first application to be made.

Developers added that it is envisaged that the additional work to the neighbouring property on The Broadway will be submitted as a separate planning application in the near future.

It is expected that the overall development will comprise the following:

  • New build offices at 12 Hartfield Road and 9 Broadway Place (the current application).
  • A new rooftop terrace to 17 - 27 The Broadway, including a cafe, bar and restaurant, and outdoor rooftop cinema.
  • Internal improvements will included work to stairs, cores and additional cinemas are proposed to the second floor.
  • Improvements to 17 - 27 The Broadway - including new shopfronts and glazing, entry features and a new tiled facade treatment.

In a separate application submitted late last year, plans to build an eight-storey hotel in 27-39 Hartfield Road were also put the council and are awaiting a decision.
