The first 24-hour defibrillator has been installed along Richmond riverside.

Automatic External Devices (AEDs) are being installed all over the UK, from shops to sports centres and school, as figures found that an estimated 30,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals every year.

However, Richmond borough has only just got its first AED. The project was initiated by Richmond Bridge Boat Club.

Ten riverside organisations donated to help fund the purchase of the defibrillators.

Nicola Huttner, former Chair of the community boat club, said: "On making some enquiries, I was astonished to discover that Richmond town centre did not have not a single 24 hour facility of this type of life saving equipment.

"Installing the AED outside our clubhouse on the tow path near Richmond Bridge seemed a logical location given the high pedestrian traffic.

"Mark Edwards MBE of Richmond Bridge Boathouses assisted us by co-ordinating the donations thanks to his local river community contacts and we received helpful advise on the purchase from the London Ambulance Service, who are running a training session this weekend at our clubhouse for representatives of the donor organisations.

"If someone's not breathing do not be afraid to use one of these devices, as shocking someone's heart in this way doesn't do any damage.

"Simple instructions tell you where to place the pads and oral instructions will talk you through the process.

"In instances where a defibrillator is used alongside CPR, the victim's chances of survival rise to 74 per cent."
