Plans to demolish a "dilapidated and underused" garage in west Wimbledon and replace it with flats have been approved.

The Worple Road site, which is surrounded by a mix of 1800s era homes as well as 1960/70s developments, will now be turned into five storeys worth of eight new homes.

The applicants wrote in the planning documents that the flats would help the overall look of the area.

"The existing garages and concrete driveway on site has a negative contribution to the 'conservative area', the physical features of the garages detract from the conservation area's character," it read.

"The proposed development aims to compliment and add value to the area.

"The proposals will significantly improve the current dilapidated and underused backland site and will make a positive contribution to the conservation area and to the borough’s housing supply by making the most efficient use of this brownfield land," it read.

"The proposed development would create a sustainable residential development in an area characterised by residential use."

Similar plans for the site were submitted in 2016 and subsequently approved, although were never carried out.
