The plan to relocate Lidl's head office from Wimbledon to Tolworth as part of a £70 million development has taken another step forward.

Initially it was hoped that construction would begin by the end of 2017 in a move that will relocate the supermarket's HQ from Worple Road to Jubilee Way.

But concerns from Kingston Council temporarily put a halt to those plans.

But now work has finally begun and the cut-price chain's CEO, Christian Härtnagel, couldn't be happier.

“We’re very excited to have started the construction of our new head office and it was great to welcome guests to the site today," he said.

"The investment in our new headquarters underlines our long-term commitment to the UK and will help facilitate our growth for years to come.

"We’re really looking forward to joining the Tolworth community and becoming a neighbour to the existing businesses here.”

Politicians were shown architects’ plans for the new building during a tour of the construction site last week.

This included Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey who said: “The fact that Lidl chose Tolworth as its home for a new UK head office, bringing with it new jobs and business, is fantastic news for the local area.

"It was great to visit the construction site today, meeting the team who are delivering this project and I look forward to welcoming Lidl to our community.”

The new head office is expected to accommodate 800 employees and it is hoped to be completed over a two year period.
