A rugby club has praised the "overwhelming response" from the community following a string of break-ins left it on the verge of collapse.

The Mitcham and Carshalton Rugby Club had a summer to forget last year when they were broken into half-a-dozen times.

Not only did this result in stolen property, but damage to the facilities.

In wake of this a Gofundme page was set up to try and bring the club back to its former glory.

Now six months on, more than £6500 has been raised.

Current first grade player Keir Waller couldn't thank the community enough for its generosity.

"The overwhelming response and donations received via our gofundme page have without question created a lifeline for the club," he said.

"The generosity of our donors has allowed us to not only fix the roof damage but also upgrade the electrics to a commercial standard.

"As always at Mitcham and Carshalton the atmosphere is incredibly positive and our members have been fully involved.

"We are keen to continue the renovations and keep up the new and improved standards of the club."

But the work isn't done yet.

Mr Waller said in order to ensure the club remains viable for years to come, it needs to get back on track in terms of nights out.

"Because of the recent renovations we are now in the position to restart out social calendar, beginning with the Six Nations tournament which we will be hosting every England game," he added.

"We are now in need of new volunteers to help with the day to day running of our great club.

"We always welcome new social members players of any age and ability into both our mini and senior divisions and anyone interested in joining the most welcoming and friendly club in south London should get in touch via any of our social media or our website."
