In a bid to expand its Morden store, Lidl has "served notice" to evict the Met Police's Safer Neighbourhood Office in Morden.

A planning application was submitted by the supermarket earlier this month to accommodate more selling space in the Aberconway Road police building.

"The works will enable Lidl to extend the sales area and warehouse of its foodstore into unit 2, which currently serves as a Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhood Unit Office," a document attached to the application read.

"In order to serve the larger sales area and the foodstore as a whole, Lidl will also extend the store’s existing warehouse into the back half of unit 1, which is currently occupied by Iceland."

A spokeswoman for the Mayor of London's office for policing and crime confirmed that Lidl is the owner of the site and that it served notice to exit by April 12.

"The proposed change of use will also provide an active street frontage and window display," the same document read.

"The quantum of additional sales floorspace proposed will not compromise the position of the Morden District Centre in the borough’s retail hierarchy and is of a scale that is wholly appropriate for the Centre.

"Indeed, the additional sales floorspace will actually strengthen the convenience retail offer available within the Centre, thus widening consumer choice and enhancing its vitality and viability."
