Greenwich Council has sent out a warning to residents after a number of British Gas uniforms were stolen.

The borough's Trading Standards unit sent a letter to locals in a bid to stop people being taken in by fraudulent behaviour.

The council has been made aware a number of British Gas uniforms have been stolen in the London area, after The Times posted a warning.

Residents are urged to be extra vigilant, and verify the authenticity of anyone claiming to be from this company.

If you are in any way unsure, you should not let them into your house. All legitimate workers will happily confirm their identity.

This advice applies to all cold callers, you must be confident they are who they say they are before allowing them into your home.

If anyone attempts to enter your home without permission, you must call 999.
