Lee Bowyer would be “amazed” if George Lapslie recovers in time for Charlton’s trip to Barnsley after he was injured in a late defeat to Coventry City on Boxing Day.

The midfielder came on as a substitute for Krystian Bielik on 87 minutes before he was involved in a collision with Luke Thomas that left both players on the ground for several minutes.

Lapslie left the pitch on his own two feet, with a bandage wrapped around his head after having suffered a concussion, while Thomas was stretchered off.

Bowyer now doubts whether the midfielder can be cleared in time for Charlton’s trip to promotion-chasing Barnsley at Oakwell this weekend (December 29).

The Addicks boss said: “George Lapslie is looking like another concussion. He’s got a big cut on his head and it’s not looking good.

“I’d be amazed if he was fit for Saturday.”

It comes as Joe Aribo missed the Coventry trip following a knee injury he suffered in the Gillingham win, adding to Charlton’s injury woes.

Before the Boxing Day clash, Jamie Ward was being sounded out for a return following a thigh problem alongside Karlan Grant who made the bench.

However, Josh Cullen, Igor Vetokele and Lewis Page are still some way off coming back as Jake Forster-Caskey remains the long-term absentee.

Naby Sarr, who was sent off after 56 seconds in Charlton’s win against AFC Wimbledon, will also miss the trip to Barnsley as it’ll be the third of his three-match suspension.

Bowyer had no timeline on Aribo’s return as yet but said he’s “going to be out for a little while”.
