Tom Bayliss hit a late winner as Coventry City ended Charlton's three-match winning run and dented their playoff hopes in a Boxing Day clash at the Ricoh Arena.

The 19-year-old fired home into the bottom corner on 89 minutes, and replenished their lead after Darren Pratley cancelled out Jordy Hiwula's opener shortly before half time.

Charlton remain in fourth in League One but are now three points behind Sunderland, who are third, and seven behind second-place Luton Town.

Coventry move up one spot into 13th after they went on a run of seven games without a win in the league, having previously won five on the bounce.

Karlan Grant made the bench as Lee Bowyer opted to start Nicky Ajose and Lyle Taylor up top, while Chris Solly deputised at left back once again.

The Addicks were under severe pressure during the opening 45 minutes, as Coventry went close through Conor Chaplin and Luke Thomas in close range scoring chances.

Despite Ajose and Taylor having half opportunities of their own, it was effectively all Coventry - and the hosts got their reward when Hiwula headed in past Jed Steer on 42 minutes.

Bowyer opted to replaced Ajose with Grant for the second half, though the restart was much the same as before.

But shortly after Ben Reeves was taken off for Mark Marshall, a free-kick into the box finally found Pratley who headed home on 58 minutes for the equaliser - his first league goal this season.

The match became more evenly split, though Charlton would have four of their players booked by referee Simon Hooper - with the last coming after a late, reckless challenge from Taylor.

Coventry were growing in frustration but soon went in front once more, when Bayliss hit home into the bottom corner of the net a minute before time to break Charlton's resistance.

Despite there being five minutes of added time, a collision between substitute George Lapslie and Thomas saw the latter stretchered off while the visitors couldn't create another scoring chance thereafter.
