A new Quietway cycle route connecting Sutton town centre and Worcester Park could be installed if plans are approved.

The path cuts through both Throwley Way and St Nicholas Way, going up west Sutton and north Cheam, before stopping at Malden Green according to draft plans.

Although in the very early stages, Sutton Council and Transport for London (TfL) are currently looking into the plans – while future ideas also remain in the pipeline.

The prospective Quietway may also extend in both directions to Croydon and Kingston town centres, east and west of the borough respectively.

It aims to “create a quiet route through neighbourhoods and open spaces, providing an excellent environment for cyclists,” according to a new report.

If given the green light then there would need to be formal and informal consultations, scheduled to finish in October 2020, before it’s fully completed some time in 2022.

TfL has earmarked a ‘Quietways Delivery Plan’ budget of more than £3.2 million for the east-west corridor between Sutton and Worcester Park, the report says.

It will be released in various stages, while £5,000 has already been handed out to the council to help fund officers’ time in preparation for the scheme’s consultation.

The council’s environment and neighbourhood committee is being recommended to endorse the plans and agree to the provisional route at its meeting on November 29.

Quietways are “continuous and convenient” cycle routes in less busy areas of London, according to TfL, while most of the first seven have been completed.

The latest, a 4-mile route which links Stratford and Plaistow in east London, was opened last month.

They go alongside other initiatives such as Cycle Superhighways and “Mini-Hollands”, with the intention to design a “comprehensive” network of cycle routes around the city.
