Developers’ plans for a six-bedroomed home estimated to be worth more than £1.6 million in south Cheam have again been met with fierce opposition.

Boathouse Properties want to knock down the property in Burdon Lane before building five new four-bedroomed and two five-bedroomed two-storey homes.

There would also be two outbuildings which would provide 13 parking spaces, as well as cycle and refuse storage facilities.

The proposals are almost identical to the ones which they scrapped in July earlier this year, only with the revised plans coming with a few alterations.

But just as the ones in the summer were heavily opposed to, so are these ones.

A total of 119 objections have been submitted for the new plans at the time of publishing, up from 73 the last time.

Those against include Cheam councillors Elliot Colburn and Holly Ramsey, UKIP’s former Sutton and Cheam parliamentary candidate Angus Dalgeish, and the Belmont and South Cheam Residents’ Association.

Grievances range from the type of development being proposed to the area’s local character, as well as potential parking problems and alleged violations of Sutton Council’s back garden land development policies.

The home in Burdon Lane

Julian Crane, of Burdon Lane, expressed “vehement” opposition to the “proposed overdevelopment of the site” in his objection letter.

He said: “South Cheam has always been, and hopefully will always remain, an area of large detached family houses – which stand on large, relatively undeveloped plots.

“A development of seven, four to five bedroom dwellings – plus outbuildings – in a rear garden of this size is not at all in keeping with this environment and does not respect or enhance the character and appearance of the area.”

Mr Crane added that it’s also believed the development violates planning regulations for south Cheam, which are outlined in a special policy area document.

He believes the development “will not only change the visual impact of the area but would start to have negative impacts on the community as a whole”.

The Burdon Lane home was sold for £1.6 million last December, according to the Government’s Land Registry database.

At the time of publishing in July it was estimated to be worth around £1.57 million by property website Zoopla before its valuation rose to £1.61 million.

Boathouse Properties’ proposals are currently in the consultation period after they were first validated by the council on October 12.

It’s not currently known when a decision will be made, however, it could be announced in late December or early January.

The developers, who are based in Esher, north Surrey, could not be reached for comment.
