People gathered to say an emotional farewell to the current Woolwich ferries on their last voyage across the Thames.

Yesterday marked the last day the old Woolwich vessels will run before new versions are brought in.

Many people gathered last night to wave goodbye to many memories of their times on the boats.

The work has already started and is set to be completed at the beginning of next year.

During this time Transport for London will be replacing the berths and replacing the old boats with ferries that give out less emissions.

The Woolwich Foot Tunnel will remain open for foot passengers and cyclists throughout the work.

Kim Hastings took to Facebook and said: “Cycling home towards north woolwich I remembered today was the last day of the ferry operating in its current form so I thought I'd cross the Thames by ferry one last time rather than use the foot tunnel.

“As I cycled towards it, one of the crewman said 'you're the last for the last time'. I cycled on to the ferry with Very Lynn singing We'll Meet Again.”

Kim told News Shopper she didn't expect such an overwhelming response from her Facebook post and said she was very touched.

She continued: “Throughout this I couldn't help but remember the fun times I spent on the ferry with my family and friends and I confess to tearing up - end of an era.”

The ferries will be running fully again in January 2019. you have fond memories of the Woolwich ferries? Let us know in the comment below or on Facebook.
