As the temperature drops, the council is urging residents struggling to pay gas or electricity bills to check their eligibility for fuel grants.

There is £70,000 in the council budget for grants of up to £85 per household.

Councillor Stephen Speak, cabinet member for finance and performance, said: “Fuel grants are part of the council’s programme of support offered during the winter months for those struggling to pay for heating.

“We know the difference it makes to vulnerable residents in the borough and encourage eligible residents to claim it.”

There are a limited number of grants available and they are given out on a first come first serve basis.

This scheme is open to anyone on a low income including pensioners.

To apply for a grant, download an application form from the council’s website, or by pick up a hard copy form the Civic Centre and libraries across the borough.

The deadline for applications is March 30, 2018.
