More than 200 people have signed a petition against Turing House School being moved to Heathfield village in Whitton.

Hounslow Council currently owns the proposed site for the school, on the open space behind Hospital Bridge Road, and is currently negotiating the sale with the Education Funding Agency.

However, the ‘No to Turing House School in Heathfield’ petition is already one fifth of the way to achieving the 1,000 signatures needed by February 22 for the matter to be brought before council.

Concerns include the impact on traffic congestion and parking as well as impact on nearby Twickenham School, already threatened by the newly built Richmond upon Thames School.

Campaigners also say there are insufficient public transport links, and that the increase in traffic would impact on residents' health and safety from noise and air pollution in Heathfield, which already has the highest hospital admissions for asthma, heart disease and obesity.

The petition states: "Heathfield has only 27 per cent open space. This ranks us 16th out of 18 wards in Richmond for open space. We urge the council to stick to the Richmond Council Local Plan which states that only 'small scale structures may be acceptable, only if it does not harm the character and openness of the Green Belt or Metropolitan Open Land.'"

Richmond Council decided last month to temporarily house Turing pupils in Clarendon School in Hanworth Road, Hampton, as well as at it's current site in Teddington, until the new site in Whitton is completed in 2020.

Meanwhile, the ‘No to Turing in Heathfield’ action group assembled outside council offices on Tuesday November 28 to protest with homemade placards.

Richmond Council have said building the school on that site will be subject to planning permission and a full community consultation.
