MP Zac Goldsmith cut the ribbon at Kingston’s first charity shop specialising in furniture for the borough’s disadvantaged families.

Mr Goldsmith declared the Kingston Community Furniture’s first retail outlet open on Thursday, July 28. It was his first store opening since his failed London mayor bid in May.

He described the Dollary Parade shop as “a fantastic initiative” while cutting the ribbon. KCF helps people experiencing hard times and deprivation furnish their houses on an extremely tight budget.

Last year the charity helped nearly 1,200 disadvantaged households.

Much of KCF’s stock comes from house clearances and domestic collections. Service manager Adrian Collins said he wanted to encourage people to donate now the new shop is open.

Any furniture that cannot be resold or upcycled is recycled. Last year KCF recycled almost 400 tonnes of waste resulting in an estimated carbon saving of 1705 tonnes.

The shop sells everything from wardrobes and sofas to cookers and fridges and restores any stock to ensure it is in good condition. Discounts are also available for the unemployed.

Mr Collins said: “It’s a great next step for KCF and a personal dream come true. I’m proud to have played a part in it.”

Last month the charity celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Chief executive Shane Brennan said: “Over the last seven decades, we have evolved and grown while remaining dedicated to supporting people to live independently.”
