Staines dismissed newly promoted visitors Chobham for 168 in 55 overs on Saturday, but received only 46 overs back and fell short of the win and, more disappointedly, the winning draw.

Captain Brett Archer admitted: "In hindsight we could have taken more risks earlier in our innings, but it was very difficult on a slow pitch.

"The extra overs that we might have received could have made the difference, but we shouldn't expect our opposition to give us that opportunity if they aren't forced to"

Archer, having elected to field first, had to turn to his brother Sean to take the first wicket when the opening attack of Bloomfield and Mullard was unable to make a breakthrough. Jas Raipur (7-40) and young Kavish Patel (2-43) then forced Chobham to bat on until they were eventually all out in the 55th over.

A bright start in reply by Kirk Mullard (24) gave Staines some momentum, but scoring was never easy as Chobham opened with two slow bowlers.

Adam Smith was run out for 27 and Staines were beaten by the clock.

The seconds and thirds also played Chobham, with the seconds losing away and the thirds winning at home.

Staines II set just 160 in 52 overs (Dave Fletcher 47 and Peter Roberts 37) and Chobham got the runs in 39 overs for the loss of just three wickets.

The youthful third XI triumphed after setting a target of 203 thanks to a fine half century from 60-year-old Keith Hall.
