A new set of ‘smart junctions’ will be introduced on the M25, Britain’s busiest motorway, in an effort to cut down on crippling congestion seen at peak times.

Traffic lights regulating access to the motorway will be upgraded later this year to improve traffic flows in the two rush hour periods each day, the Times reported.

The new traffic lights on the 117-mile M25 will be linked to those from local road networks which feed in vehicles, allowing quicker response to traffic build-ups, Highways England said.

President of the AA Edmund King said: “Frankly there are too many junctions on the M25 and lots of the problems are caused by ‘junction hoppers’ who come on and off in the space of one junction and cause a domino effect when they brake.

“It needs to be managed much more efficiently and hopefully this will help things.”

The upgrade is just one part of a £150million plan to ease congestion and improve traffic flows on motorways across the UK.

The motorway between junction 8 at Reigate and 11 at Woking feeds traffic into south London, especially Croydon, Sutton and Kingston.
