A man has died after being hit by a train at the level crossing at Mortlake.

Trains between Richmond and Barnes were cancelled until 3pm.

British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed a man was pronounced dead after they were called to the station at 11.50am.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and the next of kin have been informed.

A BTP spokesman said: “We were called to Mortlake station at approximately 11.50am on Tuesday, 5 April following reports of a person being struck by a train. 

 “Officers from BTP, Metropolitan Police and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service also attended where a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

 “Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform his family."

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Frank Lehmann,was a passenger on the train.

He said: "I was sitting on the front row. Before the impact the train whistled.

"This was at the level crossing at Mortlake station - it was a pedestrian rather than a car. There were a lot of police cars and officers there."

Mr Lehmann also said the train was still on the tracks and passengers were being led from the back of the train towards Mortlake station.

Mas Mahroof, control officer at Mortlake Station Cars said that emergency staff had arrived.

Trains are now running as normal between Richmond and Barnes.
