A care worker has been suspended pending a police investigation into a death at a Teddington dementia home.

Police confirmed they were called to Homemead in Park Road at about 7am on Friday, November 6, and an 80-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Heather Murray, senior carer at Homemead, said the member of staff who was responsible for the elderly lady’s care had been suspended.

She said the member of staff suspended had been on duty on the night of the death.

Ms Murray said to her knowledge it was the first time a staff member had been suspended following a death at the home.

She said: "If an investigation in underway it is right that someone is suspended."

Ms Murray said the resident who died was not particularly ill, but suffered from dementia.

She said: "I can’t speculate anything, I was not working that day.

"It [the investigation] is an internal matter as well as a police matter."

Home manager Anna Chioariu was unavailable for comment as she was away at a conference, Ms Murray said.

A postmortem examination has been carried out at Kingston mortuary but results are pending.

A police spokesman said at this early stage the death was not being treated as suspicious but confirmed an inquiry was ongoing.

Homemead dementia care home is a 26-room centre run by Central and Cecil, a not-for-profit organisation set up 89 years ago as a refuge for women.

A Care Quality Commission report in July 2015 rated the home "good" in every category.
