A driver captured the dramatic moment a woman obliviously walked in front of his car on a dual carriageway in Twickenham.

The woman walked in front of Darren Vaughan's car at St Margarets roundabout, in the A316, at 1am on December 20.

Mr Vaughan recorded the terrifying footage with a camera device on his car's dashboard.

He said: “Although the speed limit is 40mph, my speed was recorded at only 25mph as I entered the roundabout and 23mph by the time the girl came into view.

“Had she been dressed in all black and not wearing a light coloured skirt then doubt whether I would have noticed at all and if I had been driving at the speed limit then, needless to say, this would have been a fatal accident.

“Fortunately my speed and no traffic to my right gave me both the time and the space to swerve around her and despite sounding the horn, the video shows that the girl did not bat an eyelid.

“This incident should make people think twice about the dangers of walking alone when drunk and wearing all dark clothing at night.”

The unidentified girl appeared to be “reckless and drunk” and “completely oblivious to her surroundings”, according to Mr Vaughan.

A 42-year-old man suffered a fractured leg and serious head injuries when he attempted to cross six A316 Country Way lanes, near Hanworth, in February 2013.

In March 1991, Nicola Regan died in front of a group of friends when she was hit by a car while crossing the road near Old Deer Park in Richmond.
