A campaign has been launched to reallocate the postcode of 34 Whitton streets from Hounslow to Twickenham.
The We Want to be Whitton petition has been set up by Lyn Adams-New and Michelle Phelan to end what has been described as “decades of postcode error”, despite Whitton being part of Richmond borough.
Ms Adams-New, who lives in Conway Road, said: “We live in Whitton but because of the Royal Mail we are labelled with a Hounslow post town.
“This can impact in a number of ways, including house prices and insurance.
“Most companies or individuals use the postcode to determine values or costs and we are adversely affected by a decision taken by the Royal Mail decades ago.”
Campaigners took the petition to Twickenham MP Vince Cable on Friday, January 17, seeking his support in asking for a meeting with Royal Mail over their concerns.
Campaigner Michael Wilson said: “Although Vince Cable has previously raised this issue in Parliament, he agreed to write to the Royal Mail and ask for them to meet with a group of residents to see if we can find a resolution.
“Lots of people have raised this issue with me while I have been out and about speaking to local residents in the past few months.”
The group said the issue affected people across the borough, including in Twickenham where some households have a Feltham address, and in Hampton Wick where homes have a Kingston postcode.
Fellow campaigner Ms Phelan added: “Councillor John Coombs is presenting the signatures we have collected so far to Richmond Council on Tuesday night [tonight].
“We want as many people to sign so that we can show to the Royal Mail just how many residents in Hounslow are entitled to a Whitton postcode.”
