A £70m contract to help build Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 was won by a Teddington business.

Byrne Bros scooped the contract to deliver the core concrete structure for Terminal 2’s satellite pier, Terminal 2B, which is expected to open in June next year.

The company, whose headquarters are in Hampton Road, Teddington, was one of 140 businesses that will be involved in the £2.5bn project to create the terminal that more than 20m passengers will pass through each year.

Business Secretary and Twickenham MP Vince Cable said: “I am delighted to see that a local company, Byrne Bros, has been able to benefit from major contract work at Heathrow using innovative technology.

“I shall soon be visiting the company to congratulate them and discuss the business outlook.”

For Byrne Bros the contract fuelled growth and development opportunities, created roles for apprentices and enabled them to develop new skills, including the use of 3D and 4D tools.

The company was also able to invest in new equipment and processes, including the creation of pre-assembly facilities, which are now being deployed across the company to support future projects.

Colin Potts, project director at Byrne Bros, said: “The scale of the project, the short turnaround time and the confines of an airside environment all meant that a different approach was required.

“This contract helped us to change the way we work. It improved the skills across Byrne Bros and we developed innovative approaches to construction which helped to boost productivity, improve safety and deliver greater sustainability.”

In the coming weeks the development of Terminal 2 will move into a new phase as Heathrow, its airlines and other operators begin to get the terminal ready for passengers.

This will include six months of preparations including more than 180 trials and tests involving more than 14,000 people.
