The restoration of a Mortlake mausoleum of renowned Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton was celebrated at an annual awards ceremony.
The stone mausoleum, built in the form of an arab tent in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalen, was restored through the efforts of the Friends of Burton and the Environment Trust.
Their work was recognised at the English Heritage Angel Awards, held at the Palace Theatre on Monday, October 21.
In making the commendation to the Environment Trust, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Simon Thurley of English Heritage wrote: “Heroic rescue projects like this make an important contribution to local and national history, to the life of the local community, and to the vital task of securing England's rich and varied heritage for present and future generations.”
