A Grade II listed cattle fountain in Richmond could be restored, provided it gets sufficient support from the community.
The fountain opposite the Royal Star and Garter was designed by English architect Thomas Edward Collcutt in 1891 but has become corroded.
The Richmond Society is preparing to restore the fountain’s corroded canopy, provided it gets planning permission and raises £25,000, of which £5,000 has been pledged from the council’s Civic Pride Fund.
Nicola Wood, chairman of landscaping and riverside committee in the Richmond Society, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant, which provides a great start to our fundraising campaign.
“The fountain trough now contains plants, rather than water, but with its decorative iron canopy it remains a delightful feature atop the hill, and a reminder of the days when horses and other livestock ruled the highways and byways, rather than cars.”
