Following the hugely successful RideLondon event last month community groups could win up to £150,000 each through proceeds from the event.

Surrey County Council is calling for sporting and leisure groups to bid for charitable funding following the event on August 4.

Last year London Marathon Charitable Trust, owners of the London Marathon Limited (joint organisers of the event), gave grants of around £5m to community leisure groups in London and South Northamptonshire.

The London Marathon’s involvement in the 2013 Prudential RideLondon-Surrey festival now means Surrey groups are eligible.

Helyn Clack, the county council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “After the success of RideLondon this is a great chance for Surrey groups to benefit from extra funding. Past grants have been awarded for everything from better facilities right up to preserving sports grounds.

“The main criteria are that the work can be done within two years and have a community benefit, so I hope plenty of groups will take this opportunity and apply.”

Surrey community recreation groups have until September 30, to submit their grant application.
