Merton’s Summer Reading Challenge 2013 has been a great success with more than 6,000 four to 11 year olds taking on the challenge to read six library books during the summer holidays.

It is not too late to join though. Anyone wanting to get involved should head to their local library with their library card.

They will receive a special summer reading card which they fill in after each book they read, as well as posters, stickers and rewards along the way. Six books should be read by September 14.

Those that finish the challenge will receive a certificate and a medal for their achievement and are automatically entered into a prize draw for a chance to win prizes including £100 worth of store vouchers, an e-reader, £100, £30 and £20 toy store vouchers and cinema tickets.

Merton Council cabinet member for community and culture Councillor Nick Draper said: “It’s fabulous news that we’re seeing record numbers of young people getting involved in the summer reading challenge. Reading opens up new worlds for our children and challenges them to discover even more.

"Plus there are wonderful smelly stickers to bring the stories to life, and of course the pride of having completed the books and the chance of winning prizes. If you haven’t started kids, do it now! There’s still time before September.”
