Past and present pupils, staff members, parents and governors turned out to celebrate a teacher’s MBE.

Elaine Griffiths was recognised in the Queen’s new year’s honours list for her contribution to Stanley Primary School in Strathmore Road, Teddington.

The 74-year-old sent two of her own children to the school, where she has also sat on the board of governors and now teaches music, helps with the orchestra and manages the library.

She said: “I was completely taken aback I must say I was overwhelmed.

“I have worked for two really good supportive head teachers. I have been really lucky. I have got really good colleagues and lovely children.

“It’s been really my second home, my career and it’s like an extended family.”

The Hampton Hill resident also set up the school’s annual charities day in 1984, which has been running ever since and involves every child in the school to raise about £3,000-a-year.

Representatives from some of the charities championed by Mrs Griffiths, including Save the Children, Action Aid and Shooting Star Chase, joined in the celebrations at the school on Thursday, January 17.

Ian Dickinson, co-headteacher, said: “We are extremely proud of Elaine and feel that this is a fitting reward for her commitment and dedication to the children of Stanley Primary School.”
