The formal transfer of the land took place at York House in Twickenham during a fundraising concert in aid of the trust. Richmond's deputy mayor, Councillor Tony Mollett, presided over the formal purchase of the site on The Avenue in Hampton.

The trust is in the process of raising £6.5 million to build and equip the first hospice for terminally ill children in south west London.

Chairman Edward Bentall, who recently took over at the helm of the charity, said he was looking forward to seeing the dream of opening the hospice become a reality.
