A walk tracing the events on the night of the 17th of June 1919 when Epsom Police Station was attacked by a mob of at least 400 Canadian soldiers Earlier in the evening two of the soldiers had been arrested after a disturbance at the Riflemen pub and this was the excuse to march on
the Police Station to demand their release. Discover why feelings were running high at the end of the Great War and follow the events of the 1919 Epsom Riot, from a scuffle at the Rifleman to its terrible conclusion at Epsom’s original police station in Ashley Road. Hear how events unfolded on that grim night — a mystery whose solution would only come in 1939, half a World away.
Walks will begin at the Rifleman in East Street and finish in Ashley Road and take about an hour places have to be booked with dbrooks@epsom-ewell.gov.uk cost by a donation to the Police Care UK.
