Forget the gym, Hampton Court Palace is among the biggest calorie burning day trips in the UK. New research has revealed how many steps are taken and calories burnt during the average visit to the world’s top attractions, for those looking to take an adrenaline-inducing route to fitness in 2017.

When it comes to calorie-burning potential here in the UK, Alton Towers is the place to head to, with the potential to burn 1,138 calories; with the average trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach coming in second with 953 calories.

The calorie-burning potential of the world’s most popular attractions has been revealed, according to new research that found Walt Disney World steals the show for visitors looking for a fat-burning workout.

In the UK, the best destinations to head to include Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and, for those looking for a more serene day out, Hampton Court Palace and Gardens.

The research was conducted by the team at the attraction tickets provider, AttractionTix.co.uk, to help those looking for an alternative to the treadmill in their mission to get fit this year.

The team analysed the average routes around their most popular attractions and the energy exerted there to unveil the number of miles covered, steps taken and calories burnt during the average trip.

The full list of UK attractions can be found below: 1. Alton Towers – 19,500 steps - 1,138 calories 2. Thorpe Park Resort – 11,475 steps – 999 calories 3. Blackpool Pleasure Beach – 8,800 steps – 953 calories 4. Hampton Court Palace – 15,375 steps – 767 calories 5. Warwick Castle – 7,073 steps – 723 calories 6. Tower of London – 11,375 steps – 697 calories 7. Cadbury World – 5,250 steps – 491 calories 8. Harry Potter Walking Tower – 7,500 steps – 430 calories.

In terms of overseas destinations, Disneyland Paris is the most likely to result in some serious calorie burn, with an average steps count of 25,000, but it’s Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World that will deliver the most results on the scales with the winning calorie burn of 1,558 calories.

The Empire State Building came out bottom of the bunch, burning just 183 calories per trip, the equivalent of just two thirds of a single mince pie; although those that choose the stairs are likely to feel far more of a burn.
