Movie Preview Network: Summer of cinema

Here’s my pick of what to see this wet and cold August.

We Are Your Friends (15) In cinemas from Thursday August 27

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Cast: Zac Efron, Jonny Weston, Emily Ratajkowski, Wes Bentley, Shiloh Fernandez and Jon Bernthal

Director: Max Joseph

Genre: Drama / Music

Synopsis:
Set in the world of Hollywood nightlife and electronic music, an aspiring young DJ, Cole (Zac Efron) spends his days with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one recording track that will set the world on fire.

All of this changes when Cole meets an older damaged but charismatic DJ called James (Wes Bentley) who takes him under his wing. Matters get complicated when Cole falls for James’s much younger girlfriend, Sophie. Cole must choose between his forbidden relationship with Sophie, and the loyalty with his friends and the future he was destined for.

Although Zac Efron is trying to convince the public that he has more to offer as a respected actor. This film is still aimed at Zac’s target audience of die-hard Efron fans.

Hitman Agent 47 (15) In cinemas Thursday August 27

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Cast: Zachary Quinto, Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware, Emilio Rivera, Rolf Kanies, Ciarán Hinds and Thomas Kretschmann

Director: Aleksander Bach

Genre: Action / Crime / Thriller

Synopsis:
Agent 47 is an elite assassin who has been genetically engineered to be the perfect killing machine. He is the result of decades of research and forty previous Agent clones endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence.

His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past and create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own.

Hitman Agent 47 is played by Rupert Friend who many people will recognise as American CIA agent Peter Quinn in the popular US TV Drama Homeland. The star of Homeland was our very own Damien Lewis supported by another Brit actor David Harewood and it turns out that Rupert Friend is another ‘Darn Brit’ born in Oxfordshire stealing American roles.

Prior to appearing in action movies Friend was best known for playing roles in some of our traditional classics such as Prince Albert in The Young Victoria (2009) and Mr Wickham in Pride and Prejudice (2005).

Once again this is another film based on a popular video game so not much new here really. However if you are into gun toting action films with a typical high body count then you will probably enjoy this film.
Also stars Zachary Quinto, let’s hope he can shake free from the Spock typecasting?

Although I don’t think this film will get high praise from critics, I’m sure it will be a guilty pleasure for many cinema goers.

Straight Outta Compton (15) In cinemas from August 28

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Cast: Luis Salazar, David Ulmer, Alexandra Shipp, Paul Giamatti, Keith Stanfield and Aldis Hodge

Director: F Gary Gray

Genre: Music / Biography

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of NWA.

Straight Outta Compton tells the story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever. They told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.

Jason Mitchell plays Easy-E the creator of NWA and Paul Giamatti plays Manager Jerry Heller and puts in another outstanding performance. If you are a fan of Mr Giamatti check out his frightening performance in the Brian Wilson Biopic Love and Mercy FOF reviewed.

Great cast and entertaining rags to riches movie.
