First and foremost, I would like to thank the wonderful Ms. Selina Mills who very generously gave me her unwanted ticket to this play.
I went to see Salomé because I enjoyed reading Wilde’s ‘A Picture of Dorian Gray’ and didn’t really have any expectations, knowing only a minimal amount about the plot. I’d heard the production described as modern a few moments before the beginning and my imagination began to run amok with terrible things but it was a strikingly visual performance with none of the power of Wilde’s words lost. Unfortunately, the play has moved on from Richmond but I completely recommend seeing other productions by Headlong Theatre and Jamie Lloyd, the director, if you have the chance.
After Richmond it tours to the following: Oxford Playhouse, June 1–5; Northern Stage, Newcastle, June 8–12; Theatre Royal Brighton, June 15–17; Hampstead Theatre, London, June 17–22. The powerful operatic version by Richard Strauss is playing at the Royal Opera House, July 3–16.
