Yesterday I went to see Ridley Scott’s film about the legendary Robin Hood which covers how Robin Hood became to be an outlaw. Having grown up on the happy-go-lucky Disney interpretation of this tale and later Jonas Armstrong’s portrayal of Robin’s adventures, I wasn’t sure if too much background on this character would humanise him to the point where the magic disappeared, but unfortunately Ridley Scott didn’t even manage this.
Admittedly, much of the film was very well shot and managed to avoid the new trend of far too many switches between cameras during the action scenes to create pace, but the fact that you could see what was going on didn’t make it any better to watch. As well as this, the climatic battle scene was far too long coming and was accompanied with the sounds of gentle snores as the girlfriends who had been dragged along – and a few of the boyfriends – nodded off. Cate Blanchett’s character, Lady Marion, was also very confusing in this scene. After being thoroughly independent all through the film, even to the point of following Robin to war with the French, when push came to shove she collapsed like a typical medieval damsel in distress.
In general, the film was far too long and not something I would recommend seeing unless you are a die hard fan of Ridley Scott.
