Epsom Christmas lights switch-on

On the 18th November 2017, there was great excitement in the Ashley Centre in Epsom. The annual Christmas lights switch on was at 5pm, and there were activities for children from 12pm. There was face painting, a Punch and Judy show and exciting things to see. There were also stalls from local businesses and charities.

At 5pm exactly, a large crowd had gathered, therefore making it hard to find a place where it was possible to see what was happening. Then Father Christmas, Ashley the Bear and the characters from this year’s pantomime, Cinderella, appeared. Cinderella and her father sang a song, and then Father Christmas switched on the lights after a loud and exciting countdown.

As the lights were switched on, hundreds of balloons fell down from where they had been held in large bags hanging from the ceiling, and cannons blew thousands of tiny paper confetti all over the crowd while the people cheered.

Everyone was feeling in the Christmas spirit as they walked out into the cold air outside, and I heard one person remark that the cold weather wouldn’t stop them from feeling happy and excited about Christmas and what it would bring.

The lights switch-on gets bigger and better every year, and I, for one, was happy to be there this year and to be able to share in the happiness that followed.
