We’ve all been there. Pleading our parents for a trip to the fair, desperate for a ride on the Helter-Skelter. Even if you’re left with a friction burn for the next two weeks.

Funfairs, crammed with family fun and white knuckle rides, are popping up all over the borough, especially as summer approaches. Hampton fair, Putney fair, Kingston fair, Richmond fair, are all incredible for a riveting, summer’s day out. Yet, some believe otherwise.

After roaming around Hampton fair, I decided to interview a few passer-bys.

So, what does fair mean to you?

Person A: A sense of community in the borough, I love the thrill of the rides, and incredible atmosphere.

Person B: I got dragged here by my friend, and honestly, I can’t think of anything worse! They’re a waste of money, they’re too noisy, and I always seem to bump into the most awkward people.

Have you had any memorable experiences during a fair?

Person A: Yes, many. One of the most special moments was my daughter’s birthday. I have never seen her so happy!

Person B: I have only been to a fair three times in my life. Each one was a horrific experience. As for last time, I wasn’t feeling great! (laughs)

What could you improve about this particular fair (Hampton Fair)

Person A: Although the rides are brilliant, sometimes, we had to wait 20 minutes for it to start. Also, I think some of the money collected could be donated to charity.

Person B: The price of the rides! I can’t complain noise, or the stomach churning rides, because that’s the whole aim.

Do you think summer would be the same without a fair?

Person A: Not at all! Fairs trigger the summer holidays. It’s simply a perfect summer’s day out! (laughs)

Person B: Perhaps not for some, but as for me, yes. I hardly ever go, and don’t plan to again!
