The budget home and garden retailer Wilko is set to make a move to New Malden, this is an exciting event to residents of New Malden and the aged high street that hasn’t seen a modern shop like this since the opening of fast food restaurant Nando’s.

“New Malden High Street has a strong retail offering but we’ve spotted a gap in the market for our range of great quality products at everyday low prices from Wilko, Wilko retail director, Anthony Houghton said.

“The High Street attracts a diverse range of shoppers, including new homeowners and young families, and I’m confident we’ll reflect this with our product range and store layout.

“After a hugely successful 2016 for the brand, we have an exciting expansion programme in place which will see us open more stores across the whole of the UK in 2017.”

Wilko opened their doors to the public on Wednesday 8th February at 9am. Wilko’s tweet was the first news of the exciting new shop’s arrival- ‘We are opening a new store on New Malden High Street, its scheduled for Oct/Nov but exact dates haven’t been confirmed yet. To mark the special occasion, Joanne Evans, who is the charity representative for Cancer Research UK lead a ceremonial ribbon cutting along with Wilko Retail Director, Anthony Houghton, and Wilko New Malden Store Manager, Peter Butterworth to mark the opening of the super store. The move is set to create more than 60 jobs at the 9,000 sq ft store.

Even though the arrival of Wilko in New Malden received some negative comments on Facebook, the store received a warm welcome from the local community when opening their doors.
