From Tuesday 7th to Thursday 9th February 2017, St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls performed their annual school production of ‘Oliver!’. Based on the classic novel by English author Charles Dickens, the tale depicts an orphan boy in a workhouse, Oliver Twist, who is sold as an apprentice to an undertaker by the runner of the workhouse, Mr Bumble. After escaping, he finds himself situated in London, and is taken in by a gang of young pickpockets, led by Fagin. Along his journey, he encounters numerous characters of different social status.

For months the dedicated cast had been rehearsing scenes and songs, perfecting the production in preparation for show week, and really began to come to life and reality when costume, set and props, sound, music and lighting were added. The diverse and talented cast ranged from year 7 to 13: for many this was their first performance and some their final. Despite the often stressful and demanding moments, the production was definitely an enjoyable experience. Whether passionate about drama or not, the play offers a variety of chances to immerse within the production and offer’s great experiences and skills.

The production was a significantly communal effort, with participation from the cast, band, stage managers and sound and tech crew , which were roles executed by sixth form students, and staff. The set was skilfully painted by the Art department, significantly aiding the ambiance of Victorian London. The production extended from being exclusively within the arts, with the Duke of Edinburgh Award team providing ‘Food, Glorious, Food’ and refreshments during the interval, and students collected donations for the ‘Meningitis Research Foundation’ in honour of Nancy Bennett.

An enormous thank you to the audience and everyone contributed towards the performance, making it a certainly memorable experience. All that can be left to do is to wait in anticipation for next year’s production.
