The start of this year has begun with an array of strikes around London, disrupting the lives of many citizens. The chaos has produced unhappy citizens along with swarms crowding the streets of London, at one occasion Clapham Junction was evacuated due to the intense overcrowding.

The 2017 strikes caused many to doubt the reliability of public transport and studies show that many people are replacing public transport with bicycles. Santander cycle hires increases by a shocking 149% This means more people are at risk of bicycle accidents, which is already quite common. Doctor Simon Quantrill said,"It is really scary out there, cyclists are taking huge chances." Have these strikes increased the risk people are out it? J.Drake says,"These strikes have put commuters in unnecessary danger and caused harsh interference with the people's lives." She believes that "The tube workers should deserve a high salary  but it shouldn't affect the public, we have done nothing wrong."

People who use the tube are advised to plan their journey and be aware of the next strikes and where they will take place. So far, strikes will be on February 5th for 16 hours from 6 pm. On February 7th another strike is planned to take place for 15 hours from 10 am. For more information visit the Transport for London website.

The strikes not only affect the public but the economy too. Cebr executive chairman Douglas McWilliams claimed that the economy lost around £10m a day.  He estimated that the strikes from 2009 cost the economy around £110m a day. Is that lost really worth a pay rise for tube workers? Some argue and say that"The strikers do not think about the public or economy, the strikes seem selfish, affecting so many for some extra money." Other disagree with this statement and argue that "Tube workers are not paid the right wage. They work terrible hours and the working conditions are extremely claustrophobic." The contrasting opinions cause many troubled-feeling to arise.

Some believe the government should do as the strikers wish and get the chaos over quicker. However, other believe that this may cause the tube workers to take advantage of the power they have over the government and public to bargain for unreasonable salaries. With this in mind, what are your opinions on strikes? Should it take place or not?
