Thame sunk by single goal

9:48am Tuesday 11th December 2001

THAME United were sunk by a single Staines goal in their Ryman League Division One clash at the Windmill Stadium.

Andy Sinnott's side failed to break down a stubborn Staines rearguard as the visitors went away with all three points.

Staines almost opened the scoring on 12 minutes, when Damien Smith's header had to be cleared off the line by James Saulsbury.

Nando Perna twice went close for the home side and Mark West had a penalty appeal turned down when Jon Underwood bundled him over inside the box.

The visitors took the lead on 44 minutes when Colin Fielder's freekick was met by Smith and his header beat keeper Alan Foster low to his right.

The second half was almost one-way traffic as Thame battled to get back in it but Matthew Lovett denied both Wayne Cort and Rob Smith with tremendous stops.
