A hair-raising experience for students

Some hair-raising designs were on view at West Thames College on Monday at the annual hair and beauty competition.

Hairdressing students battled it out in categories such as fantasy avant-garde, beautiful bride and men's hairdressing.

The beauty students waxed and manicured their models to strict time deadlines and were judged according to the skill, professionalism and working practices they displayed.

The first and second prize winners in each of the categories will now go on to the Association of Hair national finals at Blackpool in March, representing the college against hair and beauty departments from all over Britain.

Katrin Lehman, curriculum team manager for hairdressing, beauty therapy and Specialist Make-up at West Thames College, said: "As usual the competition has been to a really high standard. We get so many creative designs every year but this year has been particularly eye-catching.

"This competition gives the students something to work towards, a live brief and the realistic pressure of time constraints. Students at all levels compete against each other so it gives all of our students a chance."

Hair and make-up styles included leopards, cave women and superheroes in the avant-garde section and everyday styles were seen in the beautiful bride, blow dry and junior hair categories.
