Three-time Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick heads a field of highly world-ranked Wimbledon contenders in this week’s BNP Paribas Tennis Classic at Hurlingham Club, Fulham, writes Ziad Chaudry.
The 29-year-old Texas based current world number 10, who will open up proceedings on Tuesday (June 14), was comprehensively beaten by British number one Andy Murray last week in the semi-finals of AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club, West Kensington.
He will be joined by last year’s Wimbledon beaten finalist from Czech Republic world number seven Thomas Berdych, Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, fellow American Mardy Fish and this year’s ATP Chennai winner from Switzerland Stanislas Wawrinka who at Queen’s last week lost to British number two James Ward in the second round.
This prestigious pre-Wimbledon gathering also features a legends event with 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic the star attraction.
Some of the other notable names from the past joining the ever-popular 39-year-old Croatian will be 1987 Wimbledon winner Fulham-based Aussie Pat Cash, former world number four and Australian Open finalist Thomas Enqvist, flamboyant Frenchman Henri Leconte, former British Davis Cup player and staunch Chelsea fan Jeremy Bates and fast serving Australian otherwise known as ‘The Stud’ Mark Philippoussis.
The event runs from this Tuesday June 14 through until Saturday June 18 and for tickets contact 020 8233 5854 or log on to the event website: visit www.bnpparibastennisclassic.com
