New members win Oxshott's Wallis Trophy

The culmination of Oxshott's Tennis Club's mixed doubles was held last weekend where the finalists competed in the 8th year for the “Wallis Trophy”. More 20 couples had competed initially in a round robin format followed by the top 8 going through to a knock out quarter finals stage.

Games were played throughout the winter with couples playing well over 100 matches and it came down to new members Larry Streeter and Nicky Lemon defeating Ian Marsh and Vicky Stevens in a match enjoyed by a small group of avid spectators.

Despite losing the first 2 games of the final Nicky and Larry then went on to win the next 9 and thus secure the destiny of the final. In a most entertaining game Nicky and Larry proved worthy winners with a range of shots leaving their opponents struggling to catch up the deficit throughout the rest of the game.

The format of this handicap tournament follows a slightly different scoring system and after an hour's play with the score standing at 12-4 the match had been decided although they continued for another 5 games. A special trophy was awarded to Angela Ashford and Graham Woods who managed to play 18 matches in the round robin stage of the tournament.

At the conclusion of the final the organiser of the competition, Mr Frank Wallis, presented the trophies to the winners and runners up and also congratulated the large number of participants who had competed in this tournament throughout the winter in all weathers. A special vote of thanks went to Mark Bunyan who had helped to co-ordinate the event with Mr Wallis.
