Richmond director of rugby, Steve Hill, heralded his side’s determination after they launched a sensational comeback to snatch a 35-35 draw against Lydney on Saturday, writes Nick Gentry.
Richmond had taken the lead early on but, after a series of errors and some slick Lydney forward play, found themselves on the wrong end of a 14-35 scoreline with 19 minutes to go.
But Richmond, who toiled away until well past the 80 minute mark to eventually draw level, overturned the 21 point deficit.
“I’ve not witnessed such a magnificent comeback for many years,” said a delighted Hill.
“Everyone said it was a very exciting game and the final 20 minutes even more so.
“I’m really pleased the players dug deep and didn’t give up even when they were 21 points down with 19 minutes to go.”
Tom Platt, who has only just stepped up to first team level, made five conversions in tricky conditions and Hill admitted his exploits are fast becoming crucial.
“He has got a simple technique and is a level headed individual in difficult conditions,” he added.
“All of the tries we scored were out wide and he nailed all three in very tricky wind conditions and that was very important in getting us back to level pegging.
“Recently, his kicking has kept us in the game or won it for us, so he is very important to the squad.”
Next up for Richmond is a visit to Southend, which Hill believes is the sort of game that will determine where his side end up this year.
He warned: “We’re under no illusions, it is going to be a very tough away match.
“But these are going to be the games that decide what we can achieve this season.”
