Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill insists the focus will be on improving their accuracy and execution after a series of errors cost them in their SSE National League One South encounter with Blaydon.

Replacement Hugh Roberts’ 26th minute try got Richmond level at 5-5 on Saturday but that would be as good as it got with visitors Blaydon running out 5-24 winners.

Having matched their opponents for most of the first half hour, Richmond were reduced to 14 men when Christopher Davies was sent to the sin bin, Blaydon capitalising with a converted try to take a 5-12 half-time lead.

Two further tries would follow for Blaydon after the break, as Richmond struggled with their opponent’s set-piece prowess.

Hill also admitted his side had a hand in their own undoing but despite the result making it three losses in a row, he insists there is no reason for panic.

“I thought we were strong in the first half but they scored a try just before half-time when we were down to 14 men,” said Hill.

“Then in the second half they turned up the pressure and we made a few errors.

“They had a very efficient catch and drive from their line out. If you get a catch and drive it is very difficult to stop in this league.

“But we also just made too many errors and in the end it was very frustrating for us, the scoreboard probably did not reflect the game.

“We have to refocus and correct our error count, the lads will be working hard to rectify it.

“We had three guys on the weekend starting their first game, there was just a bit of inexperience in our team against a tough outfit.

“If we were not creating chances then I would be more worried. What we need to focus on is rectifying our error count and taking our opportunities when we can.”

The afternoon started in the worst possible way for Richmond, with centre James Falconer being replaced by Roberts after picking up a serious knee injury on three minutes.

It adds to a rising injury list, leaving Hill grateful for the club’s strength in depth as they look to get back to winning ways against Old Albanians next week.

“James is our sixth we have out injured out of the starting XV. That is bound to have an impact,” added Hill.

“It looks like a serious injury. But it gives other people the chance to step up and take the opportunity.

“The second team train with the first team so the idea is that if someone gets injured another person can step up.

“Old Albanians tend to always give us a close game when we play them.

"But the boys are excited and will be working hard towards putting a performance in.”
