World champions New Zealand snuffed out a spirited England fight back to triumph 30-22 at Twickenham.

Winger Julian Savea's second try of the day proved decisive as England could not quite capitalise on an impressive display from their forwards.

"We're disappointed to have lost to a team that has been unbeaten all season, said England head coach Stuart Lancaster.

"The belief in ourselves and the direction we are going in, is positive.

"The players have been great. They have played with character and pride every time they have put on the shirt."

Man of the match Savea and Keiran Read gave the All Blacks a 17-3 advantage midway through the first half, before England - after a series of line outs five yards out - touched down through Joe Launchbury and Owen Farrell added the extras.

Aaron Cruden, on for the injured Dan Carter, added a penalty for  New Zealand - unbeaten since defeat in this fixture 12 months ago - before Farrell hit back with one of his own and then added another to ensure it was 20-16 at the break.

A Farrell penalty opened the second half scoring for England and when he struck again with  20 minutes remaining his side dared to dream with a 22-20 lead.

But the visitors had other ideas.

Savea got his second of the game, despite the best efforts of full back Mike Brown, and Cruden's second penalty added to his conversion to close the game out.

It meant England could not add to wins over Australia and Argentina in the autumn series, but Lancester insisted progress had been made with the Six Nations up next.

"We are a better team than we were when we met up in camp four weeks ago," he added.

"We cannot let that level of performance slip because that is the level we expect."
