Hooker Dave Ward always knew it would be tough to become a regular starter for Quins and is out to make the most of his second top- flight chance.

The 28-year-old has made only two Premiership starts since his switch to west London from Cornish Pirates in 2012, with injuries to Rob Buchanan and Joe Gray only then giving him an opportunity.

Ward, who starred in Saturday’s 23-16 win at Leicester Tigers, is already preparing for life after rugby, having secured his level three coaching badge and a head coaching role at London Division Two South West leaders Guildford.

He made his second career Premiership start last month – seven years after his first for Bath in 2006 – and is out to make up for lost time.

“When you look at the quality of the squad and the fact Quins had only just won the Premiership when I joined, I was always going to have to wait my time,” he said.

“I’m in the last year of my contract, but I’m not looking that far ahead. I know I can play Premiership rugby.

“I’m a professional rugby player and I just want to play and play well. That’s all I’m worried about.”

Quins, for whom Nick Easter and Matt Hopper scored tries on Saturday, start their LV=Cup title defence at Exeter Chiefs tomorrow.
