Warlingham head coach Ben Stobart praised his defence after the Warl picked up their first win of the London Division Two South West season on Saturday, beating Old Alleynians 11-15 on the road.

The pace of the game regrettably brought with it an error-strewn first half as both sets of players looked for the break through.

Warlingham's newly signed fly half, Chris Beaven, was injured early in the game to be replaced by the evergreen Alex Glover who controlled the game intelligently and kicked well.

The only score in the first quarter was a penalty from Warlingham full back Joe McEvoy.

The slender lead was wiped out by a penalty from Alleynians after a sustained period of pressure.

However, with heroic defending Warlingham kept their line clear, forced mistakes from Alleynians, and McEvoy punished the opposition with two more well-struck penalties each side of half time.

Flanker John Dowling tackled well, and Zack King carried over the gain line to give Warlingham a solid platform.

McEvoy kicked his fourth penalty to put clear water between the sides, and winger Alex Skinner kept Warlingham in the game with some solid tackling, on one occasion taking out two ball-carrying Alleynians to snuff out a wide attack.

Alleynians clawed their way back into the game with their second penalty and gathered momentum.

King was harshly yellow carded after the referee had warned the visitors of persistent infringements, and in his absence, Alleynians drove forward from a five metre scrum for a touch down.

The conversion attempt was critically wide and Warlingham held on to the one point lead.

Scrum half James Agate marshaled the forwards who responded with aplomb.

Hooker Daniel Street was particularly evident with his strong drives and lock David Thornton made forty metres with a searing run from a ruck.

Late in the game McEvoy kicked his fifth penalty and Warlingham eventually ran out winners. After the game.

Stobart said: "Our defence was impeccable today.

"All the hard work that they, and the coaching team, have put in is now bearing fruit and we will have gained great confidence from this result."

Next Saturday Warlingham host Old Tottonians at their Hamsey Green home.
