London Welsh assistant coach Ollie Smith has admitted his future is far from certain even if he helps the exiles return to the Premiership.

The 31-year-old former Harlequins and England centre joined head coach Justin Burnell’s stafff in December after quitting as head coach at National
Division One Esher.

Welsh beat Bedford Blues 29-13 at the Kassam stadium last weekend, meaning a win at London Scottish on Sunday will guarantee them a top four finish and a shot at a swift return to the top flight.

But whatever happens, Smith revealed he is not certain of extending his spell with the exiles.

“You cannot take anything for granted,” he said.

“There is nothing to say I’ll keep my job or not at the end of the season. That is out of my hands.”

“If we go up I would love to stay around.

He added: “I want to coach at the top level of senior rugby.

“I have to be respectful of the fact I have a long way to go to reach that level, in the same way it was a long journey to the top as a player.”

Smith suffered at the hands of Scottish as backs coach at Esher and, with his new club currently trailing  Scottish 2-1 from three encounters this term, he is aware of the test his men face.

“For a long time I thought they were my bogey team,” he said.

“They are still in the hunt for a top four position and will not be far away.

“It will be a hugely competitive encounter with real intensity at the break down.”
