London Welsh coach Danny Wilson has hailed the spirit at Old Deer Park as the Exiles continue to battle against their financial woes.

Targeted with raising £500,000 in order to get the Dragons through the remainder of the season, a combination of investors and supporters coughed up £125,000 in the first week alone.

And, as shareholder Kelvin Bryon continues to fight for further funds, Wilson admits he has been stunned by the level of support.

He said: “The supporters at this club are absolutely superb.

“They have come to the table and put their money forward and it has been great to see.

“There are a lot of people working very hard at this club to help us through this.

“Kelvin himself has been incredible - his level of commitment to London Welsh is unbelievable.

“We are potentially on the verge of something special here and it is great to get that backing.”

On the field a much-changed Welsh side maintained their recent run of form with a last-gasp 13-13 draw at Plymouth Albion - Aled Thomas scoring an injury-time try, although he missed what would have been a match-winning conversion.

Wilson added: “I made eight changes for the game and the most pleasing thing was a lot of the squad players got a solid 80 minutes under their belt.

“It was a really hard game for us.

“We threw a lot at Plymouth but they defended extremely well, and I was reasonably satisfied overall.”

The Dragons return to British and Irish Cup action this weekend, with the Pool C toppers hosting Bedford.

But Wilson insists he will not be losing too much sleep over the clash.

He added: “If I am totally honest the Cup is a financial burden we could have done without.

“But we are top of the Pool and will still give it a go.

“I don’t think Bedford will be treating it as a priority so they may make changes and it will give us a chance to size up a side who we may meet again in the play-offs.”
